Introducing Up in the Sky team

As we return for another exciting season of touring Up in the Sky, it feels like the perfect moment to introduce the incredible team bringing the show to life—both familiar faces and new additions who will have you looking up in awe.

Back on the rig, we have our very own Artistic Director, Johnny Autin. A multidisciplinary performance artist, choreographer and director based in Birmingham, Johnny is the founder of Autin Dance Theatre and the driving force behind its bold, socially engaged work. Spanning contemporary dance, physical theatre, puppetry and aerial performance, his creations explore themes of resilience, belonging and the human experience. From the striking scale of Parade – The Giant Wheel to the urgent storytelling of Out of the Deep Blue, Johnny’s work continues to captivate audiences worldwide—and Up in the Sky is no exception.

Supporting the tour once again is our right hand on the rig, Head Rigger Jamie Higgins. With over a decade of experience blending circus and dance, Jamie has performed across the globe, from the Royal Opera House to the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. His expertise, precision and calm presence quite literally keep everything in the air.

Joining them on the rig is familiar face Will Hodson, who many of you will recognise from Parade – The Giant Wheel and as the puppeteer behind Eko in Out of the Deep Blue. A highly experienced performer and facilitator, Will has toured extensively and brings both strength and sensitivity to his work in the air.

Keeping busy this season, Mitchell Davis returns balancing performances in our new show Zig Zag! while also stepping into the harness for Up in the Sky. With a dynamic background that includes Motionhouse and performances at London Fashion Week, Mitchell brings a powerful blend of athleticism and artistry to the aerial world.

Following our exciting auditions earlier this year, we are also delighted to welcome 2 new additions to the ADT team. First up is Travis Smith, a working-class artist from the North of England whose movement blends contemporary dance with hip-hop and breaking influences. Deeply musical and physically committed, Travis brings both creative energy and a strong sense of teamwork to the company.

Last but certainly not least, we are thrilled to introduce Björn Åslund, a queer dancer and creator of Malaysian Chinese and Swedish heritage, originally from Aotearoa (New Zealand). With a rich and versatile practice spanning ballet, contemporary, dance theatre and cabaret, Björn has performed internationally and brings a vibrant, collaborative spirit to the ensemble.

We cannot wait for you to experience this remarkable team in action, so next time you join us, make sure you look up!
