Invitation to join Autin Dance Theatre’s Board

Autin Dance Theatre is at an exciting point in the company’s history and its development as a leading arts organisation and a charity. We are looking to elevate the company to new levels of engagement with local communities and artists, expand our team’s capacity, build on our growing national and international reputation, and retain and reach new audiences and participants across the UK and beyond. We need to ensure we have the right skills and expertise in our governance team to move the company forward into the future.

We are looking for trustees to help support the company’s development and steer us strategically towards our ambitions. We are looking for trustee particularly with legal skills, and accounting expertise, but not essential.

We are keen to hear from individuals from the global majority and under-represented communities to ensure we are reflecting a wide range of voices and experiences within our governance structures.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Our Board of Trustees is a diverse and committed group of individuals who play a pivotal role in steering the strategic direction of our organisation. Comprising professionals with backgrounds in the arts, philanthropy, business, and beyond, the board collectively contributes to the governance, sustainability, and impact of our charity. Trustees actively engage in decision-making processes, provide valuable insights, and champion our mission to make a lasting difference in the community.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES OF THE BOARD

  • Hold the Creative Director and team accountable for delivering high quality work, defining goals, managing funds effectively, ensuring equality and fairness across all levels of the work and staff management.
  • Support the Creative Director and Team in future strategic planning, ensuring financial and artistic goals are clearly set out.
  • To ensure the governance policies are up to date and being adhered to, and that Autin Dance Theatre is always complying with the law.
  • Full commitment to 4 meetings per year, plus extra support or emergency meetings as and when needed.
  • To support with effective reflection, evaluation and monitoring throughout the work of the company.
  • To scrutinise finances and foresee any risks/shortfalls and support with risk management.
  • To ensure the company keep proper financial accounts and that these are audited annually and submitted to Companies House and funding bodies.
  • To ensure the payment of all taxes to the inland revenue
  • To ensure the company is insured correctly.
  • Act as a line manager to the Creative Director, giving support and guidance when needed, as well as holding them accountable for delivering on goals, or in grievance or disciplinary procedures.
  • Act as a reference point when needed for funding applications or bodies.
  • Represent the company at meetings/events as and when required.
  • Offering skills and expertise to support the company where appropriate.
  • Be an advocate and ambassador for the company, using resources and contacts to further benefit the company.
  • Actively engage with the company’s work, attending performance and events.
  • Commit to ‘away days’ as and when these are needed.

TIME COMMITMENT AND GENERAL EXPECTATIONS

Meetings are quarterly, four times a year and will be agreed in advance with the board members. These will be in person or online when agreed in advance with the Creative Director and the rest of the board. Meetings are usually 2 hours and are early evening, held in central Birmingham or online.
